The declared unit for this life cycle assessment (LCA) is 1 m3 of ready mix concrete manufactured at the Holcim México, S.A. de C.V. five plants, coordinates 19.513958, -98.998977 (3 Plants), 19.5227759,-99.0127957 and Los Reyes plant in Mexico City, servicing the New International Airport of Mexico City project. Concrete is defined as a composite material that consists of a binding medium (cement paste, hydraulic cement and water, and possibly one or more admixtures) embedded with fine aggregate (typically sand) and coarse aggregate (typically gravel) to form a hard, solid mass. (1) The different compressive strengths of concrete represent different use categories. Uses such as beams, columns, floors, slabs, and other structural construction are typically specified as concrete with a >30 MPa resistance at 28 days (2). All outputs shall be presented in SI units. The five mixes modeled for this EPD are rated for structural construction with a measured MPa of either 35 or 40 MPa. Ready Mix 1 has a resistance at 28 days of 40 MPa. Ready Mixes 2,3,4, and 5 each have a resistance at 28 days of 35 MPa. All ready mixes in this LCA are categorized under the CSI master format number 03300 Concrete. (4) Table 1 below further defines the functional unit through the technical specifications of each mix and its ingredients.
