EPD: Steel frame, 7850 kg/m3 (BlueScope Buildings North America Inc)
This EPD is for steel primary framing manufactured by BBNA across six facilities, including Annville, PA, Evansville, WI, Monterrey, MX, Rainsville, AL, St. Joseph, MO, and Visalia, CA. Primary frames used in a metal build system are built-up from steel plates welded together to form an I section. Bar, plate, and sheet are used to create rafters and columns. Bar is used to form the top and bottom flanges, while sheet or plate will form the solid web. The web follows a pre-engineered design which can be tapered to utilize less material while keeping structural strength. Both the flanges and the web are welded together using submerged arc weld. End plates are added to the end of the individual frame sections using GMAW (gas metal arc welding) following AWS (American Welding Society) parameters. Additional stiffeners and accessories will be added in the same step. Once parts are clean, they are primer-coated for storage and transportation. The sizes produced generally are customized and specific to the project.
